Financial Modeling for High Growth Venture

This class will address gap-funding and programmatic support available to Michigan entrepreneurs, but will be primarily focused on how to create projections for both long-term strategic planning and investor-readiness.  Both the output format and structure of the financial model will be discussed, along with tips and suggestions helpful to creating a viable and flexible model.

John Balbach, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center
John Balbach is currently a MI-SBTDC Technology Business Consultant where he assists
technology-based companies throughout the state of Michigan in bridging the gap between
technology development and commercialization. His background includes close to twenty years
of diverse and executive-level experience spanning the nonprofit sector, large corporations, earlystage technology ventures and public-private partnerships. As one of the initial members of Silicon Valley Bank’s Seattle office, he played an integral role in the bank’s establishment of a strong and lasting presence in the region’s early-stage market. In addition, while at Seattle-based
software company Viathan Corporation, Balbach led the financial efforts that closed on both $23
million in venture capital and the company’s eventual acquisition.

He has served as a commercialization plan reviewer for the National Science Foundation, led an Impact Investing Fund focused on the life science sector, and worked on a high-profile corporate consulting engagement for a company seeking to infuse cleantech solutions into its supply chain. His background includes extensive experience in strategic planning, business plan creation, business plan analysis, venture financing and early-stage commercial lending.

Jason Plimi, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center
Jason Pliml is an entrepreneur, business consultant, and experienced investor. Jason founded and managed three profitable businesses, the most recent being Mock Draft Central, a fantasy sports company grown from infancy to acquisition.  During his time running Mock Draft Central, the company achieved annual revenue growth averaging 108%, inked fifteen software and content licensing agreements, and won consecutive industry awards for best drafting software, beating rivals ESPN and CBS Sports.

Prior to Mock Draft Central, Jason built a profitable boutique software development firm in Grand Rapids, MI with clients ranging from ACE Insurance, ASR Corporation, Steelcase' Dealer Network, Fleetwood Group, and numerous regional and startup businesses. Pliml provides a range of knowledge including technology development, alternative energy, sales & marketing, cash flow planning, and lean startup concepts.  He continues to share his knowledge and experience by regularly speaking at events on topics such as lean startup principles, investing in the energy sector, and growing businesses beyond the startup phase.
