You don't have to pay the money back if your idea doesn't turn into a successful business. However, at the $5,000 level you do commit to some future obligations you should definitely learn about here.
At higher investment levels ($50,000 and up), we will require you to spend a reasonable amount of time in Grand Rapids, Michigan to work closely with our team and take advantage of the city's resources. We'll work out the exact schedule based on your business needs, and help coordinate housing if it's needed.
At the $5,000 level, we do not take ownership of intellectual property in an idea. However, if your idea turns into an exciting business we remain investors. Learn about the details
Discovering your idea isn't going to work out is a great learning experience. That's why we require you to come back and share what happened within 60-90 days. You do not have to pay us back the $5,000 if your idea doesn't work out.
We're open to instances where an idea is developed to the point of needing a higher investment. Contact mike@startgarden.com if you have a strong case for why you should skip the $5,000 level.
The in-person update does two important things. It prevents us from investing $5,000 in somebody we never hear from again, and helps us understand the type of person we've invested in.
However, we recognize some projects may bake longer with $5,000. You're still eligible for a $20,000 investment in the future, if it doesn't seem like the appropriate next step at your update.
Be warned, however, that an update which includes phrases like, "I haven't gotten around to it," does not work well in your favor.
