U-Turn

A multi-use organization product giving that extra bit of storage where space is limited.

What's the big idea?

Has clutter taken over your life?  Ever wanted to sit down and get some work done and found yourself piling stuff on the floor?  Ever finished using your laptop or tablet and just wanted someplace to store it for a minute?  The U-Turn makes that extra bit of space you’ve always wanted around your house or apartment.  The U-Turn is a simple storage product that can be used any way you choose.  You turn your space into something usable.  The U-turn gives you options for clearing the clutter while bring out the personal style in your home.

Describe the nearest player in your field.

File bins, magazine racks and mail slots are a few of the products you can find at a home store.  But, people stow papers and technology on every flat surface nook and cranny they can find around the sofa, on the kitchen table and desk drawer you cram stuff into…It’s time to reclaim those spaces!

How are you different from that player?

U-turn brings style and simplicity to home organization.  U-turn does not dictate how you use it like the competitors.  You use it anywhere you choose, to store anything you want.  It is not a large storage locker. But, it gives that extra bit of storage right where you need it for quick access.

How does this idea scale into a big business?

U-Turn has many bracketing options that multiply the uses for the product.  Demand will rise as the number of laptops and tablets is growing exponentially, while space comes at a premium.  U-Turn could be sold through many channels including mass/specialty retail, online retail and shipped direct.

Why are you the one to run with this idea?

U-Turn has a great team behind it that is passionate about design and growing ideas and business.  The team is a mix of young designers with the drive to make their ideas a reality, and veteran business minds with experience in commercialization and retail sales.

What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?

The design is ready to prototype in low volumes.  We will produce a batch of U-Turns, sell them, and get feedback from real customers about the product.  See what people like, what we missed, and identify the best positioning and sales strategy to launch the product.

Looks great!  would want one near a desk or beside the couch/recliner.  The only problem I could ever see is there is no cushioning on the very bottom, could almost be like a drop in real life which I wouldn’t want to do to my laptop.  However this is much more aesthetically pleasing, perhaps a soft touch coating to slightly rubberize what looks like a metal material, but to still have it look the same?  I am still endorsing because I love the design and could see myself using it.  Plus love supporting fellow Kendall Design students!

I think this is an awesome idea, I’m looking at table in front of the couch right now, and I could use one of those!! I have a stack of papers sitting beside the table RIGHT NOW.
