FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
START GARDEN FUNDS BUDDY UP, MOTORCYCLE SAFETY DEVICE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., November 7, 2013 -- Start Garden, the $15,000,000 seed fund that selects an individual idea each week to receive a $5,000 investment, based on endorsements from the public and the Start Garden team, today announced Buddy Up, an OnStar-like device focused on reducing the response time following a motorcycle accident.
The Buddy Up device includes an accelerometer to track speed and velocity of a motorcycle, and uses Bluetooth Smart technology to pair with the Buddy Up app in the rider’s cell phone to create a second speed and velocity data point. Buddy Up will detect when an accident occurs and automatically place a call to emergency providers, dramatically reducing critical response time. Craig Searer, the creator of Buddy Up, says this same concept can be applied to other motorized and non-motorized sports.
Searer will use the $5,000 from Start Garden to create a prototype Buddy Up device, survey motorcycle and motor sports enthusiasts and begin developing strategic partnerships to gain further exposure and awareness.
“Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than those in passenger cars and the first minutes are among the most critical for an injured rider,” said Searer. “Buddy Up ensures that emergency providers will be called immediately, which means riders never have to ride alone.”
The Start Garden management team accepts submissions through startgarden.com. Ideas with potential to become businesses can be submitted. Each week the broader community endorses ideas and the Start Garden team chooses one idea to receive $5,000. Start Garden can continue to invest up to $500,000 in a single idea. Learn more about submission criteria at startgarden.com/help/criteria.
The next round of $5,000 investments will be announced Thursday, November 14, after the noon deadline. The next Update Night is Thursday, November 21. Learn more about Start Garden events at startgarden.com/events.
