FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
START GARDEN FUNDS ÜBERCASTER
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., October 24, 2013 -- Start Garden, the $15,000,000 seed fund that selects an individual idea each week based on endorsements from the public and the Start Garden team to receive a $5,000 investment, today announced Ubercaster (strt.gd/x2QH), a portable device that allows anyone to locally broadcast audio to smartphones over wifi, will receive the weekly investment.
Much like a low-power FM transmitter, the Übercaster device allows the audio to input audio from any device—a computer, TV, audio soundboard, etc.—and uses wifi to seamlessly broadcast audio to both iOS and Android devices. The Übercaster offers less than 50 milliseconds of audio latency and costs eight times less than comparable FM transmitter systems.
“I truly believe museums, restaurants, bars, musicians, tour guide companies can use Übercaster to amplify or personalize an experience for their guests,” said KJ Yoo, inventor of Übercaster. “Imagine walking into a loud sports bar, with more than a dozen TVs, and selecting the game you want to watch and listen to, and not the one that happens to be on the largest screen. It creates an amazingly personal experience in a public place.”
Yoo will use the $5,000 from Start Garden to purchase more dev boards and wifi modules which he will use to modify and beta test at participating venues. He will also purchase additional smartphone equipment to field-test the Übercaster, as will as purchase software licenses for further product development.
Yoo is also planning a Kickstarter campaign in coming months to test market viability and to secure additional funding. If the campaign is successful, he is expected to scale quickly due to his partnership with an Indian manufacturing firm and Williams Sound, a large distributor of audio related products.
Übercaster was selected through the endorsement of the public and selection of the Start Garden team. The Start Garden management team accepts submissions through startgarden.com. Ideas with potential to become businesses can be submitted. Each week the Start Garden team selects an idea and the broader community on the website endorses another idea to receive $5,000. Start Garden can continue to invest up to $500,000 in a single idea. Learn more about submitting at startgarden.com/help/criteria.
The next round of $5,000 investments will be announced on Thursday, October 31, after the noon deadline. The next Update Night is Thursday, November 21. Learn more about Start Garden events at startgarden.com/events.
