What's the big idea?
You’ve heard of OnStar right? Well this is OnStar for motorcycles. No I’m not going to find you the nearest Olive Garden or Panera Bread…yet. My initial goal is the reduce the the response time for motorcycle accidents. By using Bluetooth Smart technology, an accelerometer (and/or the iPhone 5s M7 chip), and an app on your cell phone, we will be able to tell if you’ve been involved in a motorcycle accident. From there emergency vehicles will be notified dramatically reducing response time for motorcycles crashes. This same concept can be applied to other motorized and non-motorized sports.
Describe the nearest player in your field.
The closest competitor is ICEDot. They are similar in concept but differ on execution. Their product sends a text to ICE contacts where mine would alert a call center like OnStar. ICEDot has a focus on adventure sports (bmx, hiking, etc.) my focus is on motorcyclists.
How are you different from that player?
Buddy Up would use Bluetooth Smart technology which would pair to your smartphone and use your smartphones GPS. Buddy Up could be integrated into a helmet or directly on the motorcycle. Buddy Up would call a 3rd party emergency call center reducing the number of false calls to 911.
How does this idea scale into a big business?
The idea is to start with motorcycles then move to other adventure sports i.e. cycling, ATVs, paragliding, and more. The way it would make money is the sale of the unit itself paired with a charge for the call center.
Why are you the one to run with this idea?
A close friend of mine almost lost his life in a motorcycle accident…Buddy Up comes out of necessity for motorcycle riders everywhere. Motorcyclists will never have to ride alone again with Buddy Up
What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?
With $5,000 I can buy development boards and work with a developer to start/create a proof of concept. I will also be able to run a robust survey on motorcyclists and start creating strategic partnerships with other people/companies to gain further exposure and awareness.
