Duba & Company

Duba & Company (formerly Duba's Steaks) is an online merchant of heritage meats.

What's the big idea?

Duba & Company, through both an e-commerce storefront and—eventually—a retail “nose-to-tail” butcher shoppe (or butcher shoppes) will introduce a unique line of beef and other meats that will offer a wonderful “flavor palate” to a marketplace which largely only knows the taste of conventional beef. These are heritage meats: the meat equivalent of heirloom vegetables and craft beers. They come from rare breeds of animals which—in the case of heritage beef—are raised primarily on pasture and on small farms and ranches.

Describe the nearest player in your field.

One well-known (relatively speaking) company whose business model resembles ours is Heritage Foods USA, based in Brooklyn, New York.

How are you different from that player?

Heritage meats derive their distinctive flavor from the terroir on which they are raised.  Because Duba & Company works with different farms and ranches, ours is a unique product. We also engage the marketplace differently, seeking to educate and inspire our customers through use of social media.

How does this idea scale into a big business?

Because of our ability to ship product anywhere in the United States via UPS or FedEX, ours is a national market. Further, we will work to develop strong partnerships with restaurants in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Ann Arbor.

Why are you the one to run with this idea?

Personal attributes of the Company’s founder include: patience, perseverance, discipline, passion, and vision. The Founder is motivated not primarily by profits but by the desire to create something truly great. Yet, profits are a key indicator of a company’s health and meeting marketplace demand.

What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?

For $5,000 Duba & Company could engage a true trial run of the online aspect of the business, offering for sale retail cuts of two or three varieties of heritage beef via an e-commerce “storefront”. Further, the funding could be used to effectively market our product through use of social media.

Let me go on the record by saying that Duba & Company did NOT invent the Segway, as the freeze frame on the above video implies. Nevertheless, if your thinking so moves you to endorse the idea, by all means…(Although, seeing the image does bring back my affinity for Gob Bluth on Arrested Development.)

Duba!  This was awesome.  I think the video was really well done.  And seeing that steak made me hungry… and it’s only 9:30 in the morning.  Do you do 2-hour deliveries for lunch?

  29. Ben Rexroat

Looking forward to seeing these fine steaks make their way up to T.C. soon I hope. Congratulations brother,  I really like the idea.

Great Concept. I like the ancient/future , experience/product marketing angle. This is not about a steak. It’s about a literal digestion and connection to a heritage once lost now found and restored to its sacred roots.  If we are what we eat, then this is rare but well done meat for the soul. Bravo!

  33. Brian Vlasich

Great Idea!  Beautiful branding with a great foundation of true passion….you can tell that Duba & Company is about more than meat! Duba & Company’s Customers will seem more like Family Members with their hospitable spirit….welcome to the table everyone!
