Maqion Locks

Maqion is a cloud-connected lock that confirms safety certification before enabling access.

What's the big idea?

Maqion uses RFID and Bluetooth technology to identify and authorize users of heavy machinery. Our lock connects to the Maqion cloud to verify each user has the proper certification to operate the equipment safely. Maqion protects expensive equipment and keeps employees safe, reducing risk for everyone involved.

Describe the nearest player in your field.

Transmon Engineering is one of the competitors we are aware of. They provide an RFID-based access control system for use on Forklifts.

How are you different from that player?

Our competitor requires physical access to manage users, retrieve analytics, or provide notifications. Maqion is cloud-connected, which simplifies the entire process. We are the only system to validate safety certifications upon access requests.

How does this idea scale into a big business?

There are over 850,000 forklifts in the United States alone. In addition, there are millions of other heavy machines and potentially dangerous pieces of equipment used in the manufacturing and construction industries.

Why are you the one to run with this idea?

Our team has experience writing software applications, designing and engineering physical products, and running successful businesses.

During the 2014 Startup Weekend in January, we created a prototype of our product, and did some initial investigation into the business model and marketplace.

What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?

We will take our prototype and perform an installation into a forklift to test real-world integration. We will seek to deepen our understanding of the marketplace and the competitive landscape, and strengthen our business model. We aim to validate our pricing model and identify beta customers.
