The Diet Sherpa
What's the big idea?
The Diet Sherpa is a mobile application that provides information and offers convenience to locate nutrition. It takes the guesswork out of finding foods that meet dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegan, etc. Acting as a guide, it helps to locate businesses that fulfill dietary needs based on user-selected filters and user location. The Diet Sherpa also allows users to upload reviews and photos of their meals, so that other users can view images, read reviews, and select a business armed with this useful information. You’ll always know what to expect with The Diet Sherpa as your guide.
Describe the nearest player in your field.
Yelp is the closest player in the field. Yelp is a directory service that is used by 100 million monthly users to locate businesses in their area. Yelp is often used to locate restaurants, however, it is lacking in its ability to accurately guide users to businesses that cater to specific diets.
How are you different from that player?
The Diet Sherpa would incorporate similar functions such as business location, price range, and reviews, but has the advantage of locating foods that fit your diet. The Diet Sherpa will allow users to tag information and photos with specific diets, guiding users to businesses that cater to them.
How does this idea scale into a big business?
Individuals with nutritional restrictions want to find establishments that can meet their needs. Restaurants that go out of their way to provide these accommodations to their customers want them to know such food options are available. It’s simple, connect the two networks and charge a fee.
Why are you the one to run with this idea?
We know the field and climb this daily mountain. From one of us being a workout buff (staying far from fatty foods), to another owning a food blog (from Vegan to Gluten Free), we all relate to the Diet Sherpa. We see the potential of a dietary tool that betters the lives of people just like us.
What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?
The $5,000 will go toward app development for The Diet Sherpa. Initially we will use the funds to build an MVP in order to prove proof of concept. We plan to provide this prototype to our beta-testers to gain customer insights, address problems, and begin the iterative design process.
