The Unscripted Athlete
What's the big idea?
College football players do not have a platform to speak to their fans, and fans know very little about the athletes they cheer for every Saturday in the fall/winter. The primary source of news comes from a player’s social network, or directly from the media. It’s impossible for a player to give an insightful look into his life through a Tweet, and the media isn’t always interested in telling the story the way the athlete would. The Unscripted Athlete will give players the opportunity to open up to their fans, and talk about their lives on and off the field on their journey to the NFL.
Describe the nearest player in your field.
The Players’ Tribune, http://www.theplayerstribune.com/, curates content published by professional athletes, primarily NFL players. The Players’ Tribune is a great case study proving with 500k unique monthly’s that fans want to hear directly from the athletes.
How are you different from that player?
The Unscripted Athlete will be the only platform where college football players can open up about their journey as a student athlete. They have fewer media obligations than pro athletes, making it harder for their fans to gain insight on their lives year-round.
How does this idea scale into a big business?
The CMS platform will generate ad revenue from day one. It will also create brand sponsorship opportunities. Unscripted Athlete will seek to partner with other national media outlets, and be the platform where breaking news is first reported, directly by the athlete.
Why are you the one to run with this idea?
I’m a former college football player, and have spent the last 2.5 years working with startups. I’ve always been very passionate about opening up the lives of college football players to their fans. My experience in tech and connection to college players make this possible.
What is a $5,000 experiment you can do to move your idea forward?
The $5k will go towards completing the CMS platform, and compensating some of the athletes for their contribution.
